Book Tag

Alexander McCall Smith

There! My cover is busted! I knew this day would come when I would have to reveal to the world how low-brow I am. Priya of Dreaming in Suburbia has included me in a book tag that’s going around the blog world. From what I have seen so far, people are reading some very important sounding books. And here I am, reading a book (in LARGE PRINT - don’t even ask!) that sounds (and looks) like it was meant for children under the age of 9. And that too with characters with names such as Phuti Radiphuti, Mr. Polopetsi, Mma Makutsi, Mma Potokwane……..I would understand if you want to sever your association with me right now.

Here are the rules of the tag -

Get the book closest to you

Open the book to page 123

Count to line five. Write the next three lines

Tag five people and acknowledge the person who tagged you.

The book lying next to me is the latest in the “No.1 Ladies Detective Agency” series by Alexander McCall Smith. This new book is called “The Good Husband of Zebra Drive” and it brings together all the familiar characters of Zebra Drive, the No.1 Ladies Detective Agency and Tlokweng Motors in yet another series of adventures. Though this book and many of the later books in the series are nowhere as good as the first one, I still continue to read them as I love all the characters in the series, characters that come to life with McCall Smith’s expert weaving of words. Mma Ramotswe, in fact, is one of my favorite characters from recent fiction.

Anyhoo, moving on to the tag, here are the requisite lines -

“I have been waiting, Rra,” she said, looking at her watch. “You said……”

Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni consulted his own watch. He had made a point of being on time and had not expected to be censured for lateness. She had said eleven o’ clock, had she not?

I have to say, it’s highly unsatisfactory to present only three lines of a book. They don’t reveal anything of the story. All you can get from the above lines is that a woman (who addresses men as Rra) made a man named Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni feel guilty about being late for an appointment he was not. That’s not going to propel you to pick this book up when you come across it in your local library or book store, right? But unfortunately, those are the rules of the tag. Three lines and no more. And, I always play by the rules. Even if it means tying my fingers together with heavy duty scotch tape to prevent me from typing out the rest of the page.

Okay, now off I go to inflict the same pain on some of my unsuspecting readers……so many of my regulars have stopped blogging that it’s becoming difficult to pass on tags. And the ones who are continuing to write have already been tagged. I tell you, it sucks to be at the end of the tag chain. But thankfully, due to the kindness of fellow bloggers like Priya, my worthy name is being spread far and wide in the blog world. So I do have a few new bakras for this task (and some old timers too who seem to be further below on the totem pole) -

f (That’s What She Says) - she did the last tag from me, so hoping this one will be equally welcome

Jottings and Musings - old time lurker and new time commenter

TAAMommy - old time friend who i think will oblige. Then again, she owes me an old tag, so she better comply this time!

May G - new acquaintance thanks to Priya

Silent Eloquence - friend who refuses to update her blog even though her loyal readers wait with bated breath

I hope you guys enjoy this tag as much as I did. And don’t worry, no matter what book you have next to you, I will always be your friend.

  • Thanks Chakli! :) It’s a nice tag too..

  • The Mma Makutsi books aren’t low brow! I love them too (that’s not why they’re not low brow-they just aren’t).

  • I meant Mma Ramotswe. Sigh

  • I will do your tag - promise. It’s just that I haven’t got anywhere near my a real book, except of course if you’re interested in the text of the protocol for a multicentre international study of an adjuvant treatment of colorectal cancer (gosh, don’t I sound posh?!!).

  • Surya: Thanks for completing it so quickly!

MG: Agree. Nothing low-brow about the Ramotswe books. i was just trying to be funny.

f: OK, you win. you might want to consider picking up the encyclopedia, for some light reading.
